Is Medical Molly The New Medical Marijuana? Not Yet!

A certain type of entrepreneurial mind thrives on the cultivation of brand identity; there is a reason that marketing is such a popular college major.  For such people, designing logos, store décor, and product names for medical cannabis dispensaries must be an endless source of inspiration, even if they have never smoked a joint in their lives.  If you spend your free time imagining a cannabis dispensary with jewel-tones beaded curtains and internal walls painted a deep shade of green that makes the air smell heavier whenever you look at it, think of the fun you could have choosing the décor for an MDMA dispensary, with a rave-themed color scheme that evokes tropical fruit flavored gummy Life Savers candy and the translucent hard plastic pacifiers you must keep in your mouth until you can get your hands on such candy.  Unfortunately, your medical molly dispensary décor dreams will have to wait, because the most recent attempt to get legal recognition of MDMA as a pharmaceutical drug fell short of receiving FDA approval.  MDMA remains a Schedule I controlled substance, which means that, if you get caught trying to buy or sell it, you should contact a Tampa drug crime lawyer.

Don’t Expect Medical Ecstasy Dispensaries to Start Popping Up Anytime Soon

Today, even though federal law still includes cannabis on Schedule I, medical cannabis programs exist in many states.  Before that happened, some of the claims of its medicinal benefits and safety had to come from physicians with their research, not merely from aficionados with their anecdotes.  Cannabis is not the only “bad drug” claimed by so many people as effective at relieving psychiatric symptoms that the medical establishment has started to take notice.  There is a medical psilocybin movement out there, and some doctors even prescribe ketamine, which is a dissociative anesthetic and a Schedule III controlled substance, off-label for treatment of anxiety.

Therefore, the authors of a recent clinical trial testing the effectiveness of MDMA, known popularly as ecstasy or molly, as a treatment for PTSD, were optimistic when they submitted a bid for FDA approval for MDMA.  The FDA refused to approve it, though, citing several problems with the study.  One of the problems was that, like recreational MDMA users, some of the patients who received MDMA in the study experienced dangerous side effects such as heart palpitations and dangerous spikes in blood pressure, indicating that the doses given in the study were not low enough to prevent these effects.  Another problem was that the patients were not supposed to know whether they received MDMA or a placebo, and even though the doctors did not tell them, the patients figured it out, based on how they felt after taking the pills.
