Second Chances Shouldn’t Just Be For Rich Kids

SecondChance

At Thanksgiving dinner, when enough alcohol flows, the grandparents start spilling secrets about the foolish and sometimes dangerous things their children did as young adults, and the grandchildren begin to see their parents in a whole new light.  19-year-old you bears little resemblance to 40-year-old you, and 40-year-old you is probably thankful for this.  It is easy to be nostalgic about your youth, but if you think about it more carefully, you are probably glad to be the age you are now, with the benefit of lessons learned from mistakes you made when you were younger.  Unfortunately, some people your age are still paying for their youthful mistakes, serving time in prison or explaining the criminal convictions on their records to prospective employers, all because of mistakes they have long since learned from.  The difference between them and the young people who get away with irresponsible and inconsiderate behavior again and again often comes down to money.  Being allowed to learn from your mistakes when you are young without them ruining your life should not be a luxury; it should simply be a matter of justice.  If you got arrested for drug possession and you do not want this incident to follow you around for the rest of your life, contact a Tampa drug crime lawyer.

Teen Avoids State Prison Again After Dangerous Driving Encounter

Even though Florida’s biggest metropolitan areas have decriminalized possession of small quantities of cannabis, the relaxed rules only apply if you are at least 21 years old.  Underage possession of cannabis is still a crime, as is underage possession of alcohol.  No matter your age, it is a crime to drive a car while you are under the influence of alcohol or cannabis.

A 19-year-old man in Boca Raton got arrested in the summer of 2024 after a traffic stop.  Police found cannabis, drug paraphernalia, and a fake ID in his car.  The state originally charged him with DUI, drug possession, drug paraphernalia possession, and fraud for the fake ID, meaning that it was a felony case that could have resulted in prison time.  It later filed a “nolle prosequi” for the drug paraphernalia and fraud charges, and it downgraded the DUI and drug possession charges to misdemeanors.  If you think he got special treatment based on this, consider that it was not his first run-in with the law.  He had ended up in traffic court at least once per year since getting his driver’s license, and not just for mundane rookie mistakes like running a red light.  He has driven the wrong way on a public road and modified his car to make it look like a police cruiser.
